Yes, the Washington State Board of Pharmacy does require Pharmacy Technicians to obtain registration before working in a pharmacy.

 

Is training required for Pharmacy Technicians in Washington?

Yes, pharmacy technicians are required to complete training at a board approved training program in two ways: formal academic program or on-the-job training. Training must include 520 hours of lecture, discussion and testing combined. And from the 520 hours, 8 hours of which should be devoted to learning the Washington Pharmacy Law.

 

What should I do to become a License Pharmacy Technician?

  • Pharmacy technician applicant must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have proof of completing a training program.
  • Must have proof of HIV/AIDS training.
  • Application for certification must be submitted to the Washington Board of Pharmacy and include payment of $50. Payment may be in the form of money order or check payable to €œDepartment of Health€.
  • Non-English speaking Foreign applicants must take a TOEFL exam to prove proficiency in the English language.
  • Residents with approved completed training outside Washington must complete 8 hours of training on Washington Pharmacy Law from a Washington licensed pharmacist.

 

Are Pharmacy Technicians required to have a Continuing Education or CE?  

The Washington State Board of Pharmacy began the process of promulgating rules as of July 2011.

 

Other Washington Pharmacy Technician requirements to keep in mind:

  • The ratio for pharmacist to pharmacy technicians is 1:3. Pharmacist supervising more than 3 technicians may submit petition to the board.
  • Pharmacy technicians may assist in manipulative, nondiscretionary functions and other duties if they are under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Pharmacy technicians may perform the following including but not limited to typing prescription labels, filing, refilling, bookkeeping, pricing, stocking, delivery, non-professional telephone queries and third party reimbursement documentation and other duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. All duties must be subject to restrictions of the board rules.
  • A disciplinary action may be given to pharmacy technician against its certification, if:
    • Certification procurement through fraud, deceit or misinterpretation.
    • Pharmacy technician is charged with criminal offense related to drugs, poisons, cosmetics in any court of competent jurisdiction.
    • Has exhibited grave incompetency in performing his or her duties.
    • He or she has willfully and repeatedly committed violation of the rules and regulations of the Washington State Board of Pharmacy.
    • He or she is found impersonating a licensed pharmacist.
